Most people gain weight during the holidays. Then they furiously diet and exercise right after New Year’s.
Usually these New Year’s Resolution efforts fizzle out in a few weeks, and people are left with the pounds they gained over Christmas. This means they gain a few pounds every year. Overtime the weight adds up.
And as you get older this weight gets harder and harder to lose. Not impossible, just more difficult. Because you're getting farther and farther from that awesome teenage metabolism. Plus, people tend to get more sedentary as they get older. This is just how things tend to go in the...

Let’s be honest. Life happens.
You may be well on the path to feeling confident in your body and dropping those 40 lbs. Those 40 lbs that seem like they magically appeared overnight.
You go to the gym a few times a week. You’re eating better and going to bed earlier. All is going well.
You feel like you’ve taken back control of your weight. Like it’s not something you’re stuck with, but something you have power over.
You’re at the lowest weight you’ve been in years and you can see no reason why you’re not going to keep making progress.
Then the holidays happen.
Between lots of traveling t...

Healthy eating is both a habit and a skill set.
Today, I’m going to focus on the skill part. Because you wouldn’t try and pick up 300 lbs on day 1 at the gym. You’d work up to it. Same can be said with any sort of skill. When learning a language, you learn the easy stuff first, like “hello” (or “hello world” if it’s a programming language).
With moderating your nutrition it’s the same. You have to start from wherever you are on the skill continuum and move forward from there.
In this post, I’m going to give you a series of progressions to guide you towards eating more moderately.
First though,...

I still practically shit myself whenever I work out in a new gym. It feels like the record skips and everyone is staring at you.
You don’t want to feel judged by all the gym regulars. Totally fair. Nobody likes feeling judged.
Unfortunately, until gym culture becomes more welcoming (it does seem to be on it’s way), most commercial gyms are going to feel like this i.e. terrible.
Thus, the only way to be “fit enough" to feel like you fit in is to actually start going to the gym.
You can totally get fit by most definitions at home. If you eat lots of veggies and protein and run up a steep hill/...

Western work life is all but synonymous with a perpetual presence of cupcakes, cookies, and let’s not forget the notorious candy bowl.
The constant bombardment of, “eat this! eat this!” at work is one of the trickier barriers to overcome. Being stuck at a desk for hours on end doesn’t put you in a good mental framework to deal with the constant temptation of that oh-so-seductive fun size snickers. ***Side note: What asshat decided a smaller candy bar was more fun?! Size matters yo.
Before I go any farther, we gotta talk about willpower.
Willpower is like your health meter in Zelda. You can b...

In this post, I'm going to do my damnedest to try and convince you that strength training is what you need to have the best physique of your life, and that it won't make you bulky (unless you want it to).
I have a strong bias towards lifting because I've seen how it changes my client's lives. I've helped tons of people feel sexier and more confident, using strength training to shape their body. Not bragging, just explaining my reasoning.
The majority of my clients have zero strength training experience prior to working with me. They’ve worked out extensively but are frustrated because nothin...

I’m writing this on Father’s Day. My Dad passed away when I was 16. He had a rare blood condition that you’ve probably never heard of.
You could say my dad died in the hippest way possible. It’s Ok, you can laugh. If you can't laugh at our own inevitable demise, what's the point?
Besides, being able to find humor in any situation is something I think(?) I picked up from him.
Dune was one of my Dad’s favorite books. However, I only read it for the first time last year. It was easily one of the best works of fiction I read in 2016, and probably ever.
While there is much that could be said abou...

People love foam rollers. It’s like getting a cheap, DIY massage. What's not to like?
That said, there are some common uses for the foam roller that aren't wise.
Number 1: Eat it
The flavor is bland and the texture gamey.
Pretty unpleasant really. The only way it’s bearable is by adding copious amounts of salt and Sriracha.
Foam rollers aren’t GMO free i.e. they can’t be good for you. I think foam rollers are made with gluten too because gluten is sticky.
The gluten acts as an adhesive to keep the little chunks of foam from falling apart like my hopes and dreams.
Number 2: Build a house with...

This post was inspired by another post. Postception.
I received a super positive response from simply sharing this post:
Given how many people that message resonated with, I wanted to give you some tips for making small, free changes to make a big impact on your health and your life.
How do you get fit when money's tight?
You don’t need to drink kale smoothies, or go GMO free, or organic or whatever. Eating healthy doesn’t actually need to cost a lot monetarily. Beans, lentils, rice, vegetables, and fruit can be relatively cheap if you buy them from that market on the corner.
Being broke is ...
